Vintage 1960s Aluminium Lidded Box - Sandwiches?

This is an unusual, vintage piece. I don't actually know it's original purpose, but would be handy to store all sorts of treasures now.

I have roughly buffed it up on the outside, but could be done more if you are looking for a mirror finish, or left to dull down again)?
